James Welch Guthrie graduated from the University of Michigan Department of Medicine and Surgery in 1862. He then enlisted as assistant surgeon with the 20th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Following the war, he became a physician in Bedford, Iowa. He died September 27, 1911.
