Bundy served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1946. During World War II he commanded a Signal Corps unit that worked with the British on the ULTRA operation to break the German codes. For ten years Bundy worked for the Central Intelligence Agency before joining the Kennedy administration as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, International Security Affairs, from 1961 to 1963 and Assistant Secretary of Defense, International Security Affairs, from November 1963 to 1964. He served as Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Department of State, from 1964 to 1969. He was a lecturer at Princeton University from 1985 to 1987, a Trustee of the American Assembly from 1963 to 1984 and served on the Board of Directors of the Council on Foreign Relations from 1964 to 1972.

William Putnam Bundy (1917-2000) served on the Central Intelligence Agency's National Board of Estimates from 1951 to 1961, was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for international security affairs from 1961 to 1963, and was Assistant Secretary of Defense from 1963 to 1964. Bundy was Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 1964 to 1969. After 1972 he was an editor of the publication Foreign Affairs.
