Barton family.
Edmund Mills Barton (1838-1918) and George Edward Barton (1841-1870) were sons of Ira Moore Barton (1796-1867) and Maria W. Bullard Barton (1800-1883). Edmund Mills Barton became Field Agent to the Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac for the United States Sanitary Commission. In May 1864 Barton became sick and was sent to a hospital in Fredericksburg, Va. After the war he became an assistant librarian of the American Antiquarian Society and was elected librarian in 1883.
George Edward Barton enlisted in the 57th Massachusetts Volunteers. He was promoted lieutenant and later captain of his company. He participated in battles near New Bern, N.C., and the siege of Petersburg, Va. He died in Worcester, Mass., in 1870.
