Stonehaven was born in 1874. In 1896 he joined the Diplomatic Service. From 1910 to 1922 he held the seat of Rugby in the House of Commons and the seat of Ayr Burghs from 1922 to 1925. He was Minister of Transport and Commissioner of Works from 1923 to 1924. Stonehaven was Governor-General of Australia from 1925 to 1931. On his return to Britain he became Chairman of the Conservative Party Organisation until 1936. He died in 1941.
