John Mumford Swan was born 23 Jan. 1870 in Newport, R.I. and died on 22 Nov. 1949 in Rochester, N.Y. In 1893 he received his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a Resident Physician (1894-1895) and Dispensary Physician (1896-1908) at Presbyterian Hospital, Philadelphia, before serving as Director of the Laboratories of the American Oncologic Hospital (1908-1910). He also held several teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania (1895-1904), the Philadelphia Polyclinic (1910-1911), and the Medico-Chirurgical College (1910-1911). Swan moved to Watkins, N.Y., to serve as Medical Director of the Glen Springs (1910-1911). He joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps (1915-1919) and served at Base Hospital no. 19 in France during World War I. Swan was sent by the Red Cross to the Dominican Republic and Haiti to investigate health problems (1919-1920). He finally settled in Rochester, N.Y., where he established private practice and served as Staff Physician (1921-1939) and Consulting Physician (1940-1943) to Park Avenue Hospital. Swan was a founding member and President (1920-1921) of the American Society of Tropical Medicine. He was elected a Fellow of the College of Physicians in 1900.
