Aloysius J. Hogan was born Aug. 5, 1891 in Philadelphia, Pa. He entered the Society of Jesus on Aug. 14, 1908 and began his studies at the Novitiate of St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. During 1913-1915 he studied philosophy at Woodstock College in Maryland. After studying at Boston College and teaching at Boston College High School from 1916 to 1920, he returned to Woodstock to study theology. Father Hogan was ordained to the priesthood in 1923. The years 1925-1927 were spent at the University of Cambridge, England, where he was awarded the Ph.D. in 1927. He returned to St.-Andrew-on-Hudson in 1928 and served as dean there until his appointment as president of Fordham University in 1930. He remained at Fordham until 1937 when he moved to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., as dean of the graduate school. In 1941 ill health caused his reappointment to less demanding duties. He died on Dec. 17, 1943.
