H.R. Rodwell joined the staff of Auckland University College as Lecturer in Economics in 1928; became Senior Lecturer in 1939 and Associate-Professor in 1947. He wrote articles for newspapers and journals, and in the 1950s fought against excessive protection for New Zealand's manufacturing industry. Professor Rodwell and Mr Bruce G. Hardie, also of the Economics Department, intended to write a history of James Busby. They gathered research materials but the research was never published.
