Biographical note: Banker and general manager of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mercantile Company and in 1912, the Phelps Dodge Mercantile Company in Bisbee. As manager for the Phelps Dodge store, he was a defendant in the Bisbee Deportation trial. Along with James S. Douglas, William founded the Bank of Bisbee and the Bank of Douglas. He was also involved in mining ventures, and acquired banking and land interests in Phoenix and southern California. He married Ellen Goodbody in 1891. Known for her philanthropy, she established Loretto Convent School in Douglas, the Brophy College Preparatory School in Phoenix, and provided an annex to the St. Joseph's Home for Children in Tucson.
