Though the subjects of engineering and civil engineering had been taught at the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) since 1875, it was not until the founding of the School of Engineering in 1921 that full four-year undergraduate programs in civil, chemical, electrical, and mining (geological) engineering were offered on a consistent basis. In following decades programs in aeronautical and environmental engineering were added to round out the school's curriculum, as well as Ph.D. level degrees in all of these fields. Though the faculty and enrollment of the School grew rapidly in the first half of the 20th century, the curriculum remained faithful to founding dean Arthur M. Greene Jr.'s vision of an engineering education that combined scientific instruction and engineering fundamentals with courses in the liberal arts. In 1962 the name of the school was changed to the School of Engineering and Applied Science to better reflect new revisions in the curriculum that emphasized the study of engineering science over the more traditional skills and technology approach. This same year the School moved into its current home, the Engineering Quadrangle, where it enrolls about 750 undergraduates and a considerably smaller number of graduate students at any one time.
