Ingraham, Mark Hoyt, 1896-
Variant namesIngraham was born on March 19, 1896 in Brooklyn, New York.
He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, graduating early to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. After his military service, he received his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin in 1922 and his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1924. He was appointed as professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1927 and remained there as a faculty member until his retirement in 1966. In the 1930s, Ingraham established the first academic computing center in the United States on the UW campus. He served as Dean of the University's College of Letters and Science from 1942 to 1961. Ingraham died in 1982. Ingraham Hall on the UW campus was named after him.
