Kenneth Horace Southgate was born in New Zealand and trained as a mechanical engineer. However from 1953 he established a career in arts administration. In 1957 he joined the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust and from 1958-1966 managed their production division. Southgate later worked for the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Old Tote Theatre Company, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Dance Company in various roles. Throughout his career, Southgate also practised as a theatre consultant, including projects relating to the Regent Theatre (Melbourne), Seymour Centre (Sydney) and Parramatta Town Hall.
