Monteith, John B.
Variant namesJohn B. Monteith and Charles E. Monteith, Indian agents for Fort Lapwai, were both sons of the Reverand W. J. Monteith who settled at Lapwai as a missionary. John Monteith was appointed as Indian Agent to the Nez Perce at Fort Lapwai in 1871. Monteith sided with the "treaty" Nez Perce, and supported moving Chief Joseph's band to his reservation leading up to the Nez Perce War. In 1879, John Monteith resigned his position due to poor health and died a few months later. His brother, Charles Monteith became Indian agent at Lapwai in1882. Frances Whitman Monteith was the daughter of Perrin Whitman and wife of Charles Monteith.
