Francis Moore, traveler and author, was appointed by the Royal African Company of England as a writer at James Fort on James Island in the Gambia River in 1730. In November, 1735, after leaving Africa, Moore was engaged as storekeeper at Frederica by the trustees for establishing the colony of Georgia. He traveled to Georgia with James Edward Oglethorpe. He returned to England in 1736, but traveled again to Georgia in 1738 as Recorder at Frederica. He remained in Georgia until 1743, during which time he witnessed the siege of St. Augustine in 1740 and the Spanish invasion of Georgia in 1742. Moore kept journals of many of his travels, some of which were published.
