Cottonwood Coal Company

The Cottonwood Coal Company was originally organized as a Montana corporation to mine and sell coal in that state. It was reorganized as a Minnesota corporation in 1900 to take over the coal properties of the Montana corporation and to manage mineral lands owned by GN on Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range. The company owned coal lands in Cascade and Judith Basin counties in Montana, including the Stockett mines nos. 5 and 6 and the Sand Coulee mines nos. 8 and 9. It also owned more than 30,000 acres in Fergus County, most of which were sold as real estate. In 1922 the company also assumed responsibility for GN mineral leases on Mesabi Range properties. The company's largely exhausted coal lands were mostly abandoned in 1945, or before. The company's capital stock and assets were transferred to GN in March, 1941 and in December, 1945 it was formally dissolved.
