Love, Thomas C. (Thomas Cutting), 1789 or 90-1853.

Born in Madison County, N.Y.; student of the law in Batavia. Came to Buffalo to volunteer to fight in the Battle of Fort Erie during the War of 1812. He became the first judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Buffalo, and was judge in the Thayer trial, the first murder trial in Buffalo.

Under the treaty of 20 May 1842, the Senecas renounced their claims to the Buffalo Creek and Tonawanda Reservations; and the Ogden Land Company retained rights of pre-emption to the Allegheny and Cattaraugus Reservations. The treaty provided for two arbitrators, one appointed by the Secretary of War, the other by the Ogden Land Company, to assign value to improved and unimproved lands sold. Thomas C. Love was appointed by the Secretary of War, and Ira Cook by the Ogden Land Company. The properties on the Buffalo Creek, Cattaraugus, and Allegheny Reservations were surveyed during 1843 and 1844, and values assigned. Since the surveyors were not allowed access to the Tonawanda Reservation, the figures for that tract were estimated.
