By 1857 had introduced gas lighting and secured a fresh water supply for Cambridge, Mass., and had built a street-car line between Cambridge and Boston, Mass. -
1867 -1876 :Made a series of studies of the postal service and the telegraph at home and abroad that were published in the North American Review and the Atlantic Monthly -
1867 -1877 :President, Clarke School for the Deaf, Northampton, Mass. (incorporated in 1867 as the result of a movement spearheaded by Hubbard; originally called the Clarke Institute for Deaf Mutes) -
