A friend and correspondent of many peace leaders in the twentieth century, the Rev. Philip F. Mayer served as a Universalist minister at the time of the Bandung (Indonesia) Conference, April 1955. That conference was the first such meeting of 29 heads of states of African and Asian nations. Mayer spearheaded an effort to gain signatures of well known Americans to urge peaceful conciliation by the leaders at the Bandung Conference. Signees included Emily Greene Balch, Roger Baldwin, Homer Jack, Lewis Mumford, Pearl Buck, and others.
