Thomas-Smith family.

Capt. Joshua Smith (1793-1851) was the son of Capt. Joseph and Bathsheba (Torrey) Smith, of Pembroke (now Hanson), Mass. He married, in 1826, Saba Drew (1796-1877), the daughter of Clement and Judith (Briggs) Drew, of Kingston, Mass. They had four children: Joseph; Jane Briggs; Edward (1837-1862); and Caroline Moore (1839-1852).

Jane Briggs Smith (1834-1925) taught, during, and for a period after, the Civil War, former slaves at freedmen's schools in the South. While there she met Friend Fuller Fiske (1828-1906), whom she eventually married in 1872. They settled in Webster, N.H., where they engaged in farming. They had one child, William Fuller Fiske (1876- ), who became an entomologist.

Joseph Smith (1830-1913) left home at the age of eighteen and spent three years as a civil engineer and surveyor on the construction of the Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad, making his home in Leominster, Mass. He returned home to Hanson around 1851, and married, on 3 December 1854, Helen Estes (1831-1924), the daughter of William and Bethiah (Josselyn) Estes. They lived for a time in North Bridgewater (now Brockton), Mass., but returned to Hanson around 1856.

Joseph enlisted in the United States Army in 1862 as a member of the 38th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. He remained with the regiment until 1864, when he received a commission as captain in the 4th Engineers Corps D'Afrique. He remained with the regiment, stationed in Louisiana, until he was discharged in 1866. He returned home to Hanson, but eventually moved to Titusville, Pa.

Joseph and Helen had four children: Lucia Helen (1855- ), who married, in 1881, George W. Potts; Daniel J. (1857-1857); Caroline Moore; and Edward (1867- ).

Caroline Moore Smith (1858-1926) married, on 9 July 1879, Dr. Flavel Shurtleff Thomas. They resided in Hanson on the family homestead of her great-grandfather, Capt. Joseph Smith, and had two children: Percival Shurtleff (1884-1962) and Saba Drew (1893- ).

Dr. Flavel Shurtleff Thomas (1852-1922), the son of Isaac Thomas (1815-1893) and Abby (Shurtleff) Thomas (1823-1907), was a physician and author. He had many advanced degrees, including an M.D., Harvard, 1874; M.A., Shurtleff College, 1876; V.S., Montreal Veterinary College, 1879; B.Sc., Syracuse University, 1885; M.Sc., Syracuse, 1886; Dv.Sc., McGillis, 1890; and an LL.D., Shurtleff, 1892. Other areas of interest include zoology, comparative medicine, preventive medicine, and university education administration. He was the town physician, the school physician, inspector of animals, and physician to Gordon Resthome and to the Maguan Sanatorium.
