Thomas-Smith family.
Capt. Joshua Smith (1793-1851) was the son of Capt. Joseph and Bathsheba (Torrey) Smith, of Pembroke (now Hanson), Mass. He married, in 1826, Saba Drew (1796-1877), the daughter of Clement and Judith (Briggs) Drew, of Kingston, Mass. They had four children: Joseph; Jane Briggs; Edward (1837-1862); and Caroline Moore (1839-1852).
Jane Briggs Smith (1834-1925) taught, during, and for a period after, the Civil War, former slaves at freedmen's schools in the South. While there she met Friend Fuller Fiske (1828-1906), whom she eventually married in 1872. They settled in Webster, N.H., where they engaged in farming. They had one child, William Fuller Fiske (1876- ), who became an entomologist.
