Newark Charitable Eye and Ear Infirmary (N.J.)
Variant namesEstablished in Newark, N.J. (Essex County) in 1880 to provide free medical care for "indigent persons suffering from diseases of the eye and ear." Founders included Dr. Charles J. Kipp (1838-1911), who first opened a special eye and ear clinic at St. Michael's Hospital (Newark) in 1870, Robert H. Ballantine, William Clark, Frederick Frelinghuysen, and Dr. William Rankin. Dr Kipp, born in Hanover, Germany, played a leading role in the infirmary until his death in 1911. Dr. Wells P. Eagleton (1865-1946), the first physician to complete an internship and residency at the infirmary, remained on the staff for over 40 years.
