Mary E. Hill Home (Richmond, Ind.)
Variant namesWhen she found she could not maintain a full time job and take care of her blind and ailing sister, Mary E. Hill turned her own home into Indiana's first nursing care facility in 1948. It was originally called the Mary E. Hill Nursing Home for Aged Colored Women, but in later years it was open to all races and genders. In 1974 when the state required installation of a sprinkler system, the home had to close because it did not have the funds to comply.
