Southern Christian Institute was chartered in 1875 and opened in 1882 on 800 acres of land in Edwards, Miss.; oldest of six schools supported by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the deep South, the first grade through junior college consolidated with Tougaloo College of Jackson in 1953 to become Tougaloo Southern Christian College, later Tougaloo College.
