Malcolm Chesney Shurtleff was born in 1894. In 1920 he received his A.B. majoring in history at Dakota Wesleyan University. Mr. Shurtleff engaged in some graduate work at Brown University. In 1922 he received his M.A. in history from the University of Minnisota. He taught and served as Director at Callo High School in Callo, Peru. In addition, Mr. Shurtleff also attended Harvard University studying Latin American history, early Church history and international law. Following his Harvard graduate work Mr. Shurtleff taught in Nashua, New Hampshire and Grosvenor Dale, Connecticut. In the early 1930's he was principal of the Little Compton High School located in Rhode Island. Later in his career he served as an inspector with the United States Immigration Service in Bridgewater, Maine. Mr. Shurtleff was also a member of the Baptist Church in Bridgewater and Deacon and Superintendent of the Sunday School as well as a teacher of the Win-Another Sunday School class. He was also a past commander of the Max Parks Post of the American Legion. Dr. Shurtleff died in Orange, California December 23, 1959. Family members include: wife, Florence Jewett Shurtleff; daughter, Mrs. S. Collins; sons, Malcom S. Shurtleff Jr., Donald E. Shurtleff; and brother Bertrand L. Shurtleff, Brown University graduate class of 1922.
