Long, Andrew T. (Andrew Theodore), 1866-1946

Andrew Theodore Long was born on April 6, 1866, Iredell County, North Carolina. He received his commission as Ensign in the U.S. Navy on July 1, 1889, and achieved the rank of rear admiral on September 15, 1918. Long died on May 21, 1946.

Andrew Theodore Long (1866-1946) of Iredell County, N.C., was a rear admiral in the United States Navy. He was educated at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., graduating in 1887, and entered the Navy as an ensign in 1889. Long's 47-year naval career was distinguished and included involvement in many of America's major naval engagements and achievements of the early 20th century. Long served aboard the battleship Minnesota in the Spanish-American War; was stationed in Chinese waters during the Boxer Rebellion of 1900; navigated the cruiser Vicksburg in transporting troops to the Philippines for a campaign against Emilio Aguinando's insurrection, 1901-1902; was executive officer of the U.S.S. Illinois as part of the Great White Fleet which circumnavigated the globe, 1907-1908; and in World War I commanded two battleships, the Connecticut and the Nevada . In the 1920s Long was the director of naval intelligence, chief of staff for the commander of the Atlantic Fleet, chief of the Bureau of Navigation, and member of the General Board of the Navy. Long also held various honorary and diplomatic positions including commander of the presidential yacht Mayflower, 1906-1907, during which time he befriended President Theodore Roosevelt; naval attache to the United States embassies in Italy at Rome, Austria at Vienna, and France at Paris; liaison officer for the Supreme War Council during World War I; and aide to the king and queen of Belgium on the their visit to the United States in 1924 and also to Queen Marie of Romania in 1928.

Andrew T. Long was married to Viola Vetter Fife in 1928. They had no children.
