Robert Bussel earned a master's degree in Labor Education from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and a Ph. D. in History from Cornell University. Bussel was associate professor of Labor Studies and Industrial Relations and director of the Labor Education Program at Penn State's Great Valley campus, and associate professor and director of the Labor Education and Research Center at the University of Oregon. He published From Harvard to the ranks of labor: Powers Hapgood and the American working class (1999) and A trade union oriented war on the slums (2003).
