Craig Sheppard joined the Art Department of the University of Nevada in 1947, and is credited with enlarging facilities, improving the quality of instruction, and initiating a program of exhibitions with brought the works of major artists to the campus and the community. He is noted primarily for his Western theme oil and water color paintings, and his work was acclaimed in national and international exhibitions. Married in 1941 to Yolande Jacobson, she is noted for her sculpture, and has work represented in major colleges, museums and collections throughout the world. Craig Sheppard retired from the University in 1973, and in 1974 was named emeritus and awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts. In 1978, the Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery was named in honor of Craig Sheppard and his wife, Yolande.
