A specialist in personnel management, Fields spent 27 years in the federal government. In 1967 she was appointed a special assistant in the Federal Women's Program of the Veterans' Administration, charged with developing and recommending policies in all areas of personnel management relating to the status of women. After her retirement in 1971, she founded Fields Associates, a consulting firm dealing with equal employment opportunity and career planning for women.
