The Girls' Welfare Home was established in 1919 by the Girls' Welfare Board, which was established by a legislative act in 1919 (1919 Laws of N.M., Chp. 86, Sec. 1). In 1969 a legislative act established the State Department of Corrections and placed the Girls' Welfare Home within that Department's Juvenile Institutions and Parole Division (1969 Laws of N.M., Chp. 226, Sec. 1 and 7). In 1988 a legislative act established the Youth Authority Department and placed the Girls' Welfare Home within that Department's Juvenile Facilities Division (1988 Laws of N.M., Chp. 101, Sec. 4 and 13). In 1992 a legislative act established the Children, Youth and Families Department and placed the Girls' Welfare Home within that Department's Institutional Care Division (1992 Laws of N.M., Chp. 57, Sec. 4 and 51). The Home is responsible for the detention, reformation and instruction of girls sent to the Home by the courts.
