Simon, Grete

Grete Simon was born in Elbing, near Koenigsberg, East Prussia (today Kaliningrad, Russia) on November 20, 1895. She was the daughter of Dr. Adolf Simon and Martha Simon (née Borchardt). Her father, a doctor, died in 1908. Grete also became a doctor, practicing ophthalmology in Koenigsberg. In 1936/37, she immigrated to New York City, the National Council of Jewish Women having provided an affidavit for her. Her mother, Martha Simon, also emigrated some time in the following three years. Once in New City York, Grete resumed her practice and formed a friendship with Julie Braun-Vogelstein. She died October 30, 1987.
