Graduated from West Point in 1873 as 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1878. Served at Fort Gratiot, Mich. (1873-74) and then various posts in the Dakota Territory (1874-78). Participated in the Nez Percé Indian wars (1877). Became professor of military science at Southern Illinois Normal University (1883) and was later sent to the Arizona Territory (1883-84). Retired from military in 1889 and then taught and published books on infantry tactics, signaling, cadet life at West Point and Indian history and warfare.
