Ludwig J. Spolyar was born on February 5, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan. He earned his B.A. in 1952 from San Jose State College, his M.A. in 1955 and Ph.D. in 1959 from Michigan State University. Before coming to the University of Minnesota, Dr. Spolyar was a counselor and assistant professor at California State University at Long Beach (1959-1960), associate dean of students and assistant professor at California State University at Fullerton (1960-1962) and manager of ASUW activities at the University of Washington (1962-1967). In 1967, Dr. Spolyar was appointed as director of the student activities bureau and assistant professor of educational psychology at the University of Minnesota and in 1971, he was appointed as director of the campus assistance center.
