Lucy Stone (b. August 13, 1818, West Brookfield, MA–d. October 18, 1893, Boston, MA); parents Hannah Matthews and Francis Stone; At age 16, Stone began teaching in district schools, earned far fewer than men and contested it; enrolled at Wesleyan Academy, 1839; attended Oberlin College in 1843, became first female college graduate from Massachusetts, 1847; Stone gave her first public speeches on women's rights in the fall of 1847; 1848, received an invitation from Phoebe Hathaway for leaders of Seneca Falls convention; held Women's Rights Convention in Boston, May 30, 1850 with Paulina Wright Davis, but fell ill before the convention; involved in dress reform for women; married Henry Blackwell, 1855, but never took his name; daughter, Alice Stone Blackwell, born 1857; elected to executive committee of American Equal Rights Association; In November 1869, with Julia Ward Howe, formed the competing American Woman Suffrage Association;
