Francis Daniel Pastorius (September 26, 1651, Sommerhausen, Franconia, Germany–d. c. 1720, Pennsylvania); trained as a lawyer at the University of Altdorf, the University of Strasbourg, and the University of Jena; Purchased land in Pennsylania in 1683, negotioated purchase of 15,000 acres from William Penn, and laid out the settlement of Germantown, was the first mayor, member of the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1687 and 1691
