Haldimand, Frederick, Sir, 1718-1791

Frederick Haldimand was a British Army officer in Quebec and Governor-General of Canada. Son of Francois Louis and Marie (de Trytorreus) Haldimand, he was born in Neufchatel, Switzerland, Aug. 11, 1713. A soldier of fortune, he served in various European armies, and in 1756, came to America as lt. col. in the Royal American. He served in the Seven Years' War; was lt. gov. of Three Rivers District, 1762-64; in 1767 was in command of the Southern district of N.A. with headquarters in Fla. From 1773-74 he was commander-in-chief in Boston, and in 1774 was recalled to England. In 1779 he succeeded Carleton as gov. of Quebec. He returned to England in 1784 and died in Yverdun, Switzerland., June 5, 1791. (from Dict. Can. Biog.)
