Petty, William, marquis of Lansdowne, 1737-1805

Lord Shelburne served under Lord Granby in Germany in 1757. He took his seat in the House of Lords in 1761 and became President of the Board of Trade in 1763. He was appointed Secretary for the Southern Department under Pitt in 1766, but after facing opposition from George III resigned in 1768 and spent fourteen years in opposition. During this period he undertook the Grand Tour and became acquainted with many of Europe’s leading men and women, particularly the Abbé Morellet, with whom he corresponded. See Edmund George Petty, Baron Fitzmaurice, Lettres de l’abbé Morellet…á Lord Shelburne (Paris, 1898). As First Lord of the Treasury, 1782-1783, Lord Shelburne conceded independence to the United States and made peace with France and Spain.
