Richard E. Westwood comes from a river family. His maternal grandfather, H.E. Blake, Sr., was a pioneer motor-boater on the Green and Colorado rivers. His uncle H.E. Blake, Jr., was a boatman for the U.S. Geological survey and others throughout the 1920s.
