Charles A. Anderson was born in Oerebro, Sweden, in 1846, the second of eight children of Andrew and Margaret Anderson. He learned the trade of tanner and currier. He worked in England until 1870 when he emigrated to the United States. He worked at mining in Nevada for three years, and then in 1875 he moved to Montana and eventually settled in Philipsburg.
