Charles A. Anderson was born in Oerebro, Sweden, in 1846, the second of eight children of Andrew and Margaret Anderson. He learned the trade of tanner and currier. He worked in England until 1870 when he emigrated to the United States. He worked at mining in Nevada for three years, and then in 1875 he moved to Montana and eventually settled in Philipsburg. In 1889 in partnership with Carl Bergstrand he opened a lumber yard in Philipsburg. In July 1890 he bought out his partner and operated the business alone. He died in February 1893.
