Wesley McCune was born on June 6, 1916 in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his B.A. from the University of Colorado in 1937, and attended law school at the University of Colorado in 1938. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1939, and went on to work as a reporter for Newsweek magazine from 1940 to 1942. He also served in the U.S. Merchant Marine from 1942 to 1945.
