Ridley, William, 1819-1878

William Ridley came to Australia in 1849, worked as a classics master at the Australian College, Sydney, was ordained by the Presbyterian Synod and appointed to Balmain in 1850, Dungog in 1851 and New England in 1852. He studied aboriginal languages, especially Kamilaroi, and customs. He published works on Australian aborigines and aboriginal languages.

Educated at Norwich, chorister in Norwich Cathedral. Took up teaching, and in 1841 went with Bishop Selwyn to New Zealand in clerical capacity. After 6 years he returned to England and became artist photographer to Queen Victoria. Painted miniatures and oils, and published pen portraits in lithographs.
