Stika, Joseph Edward, 1889-1976

Stika was born in Milwaukee in 1889. His first assignment with the U.S. Coast Guard was on the ship Androscoggin in the North Atlantic in 1910. From 1913-17 he saw duty on the Great Lakes, Alaska, Puerto Rico and New York City. During the 1920's he commanded the Chillicothe on the Canadian border and saw duty off the Grand Banks and New York City area. He was given command of the Seneca and Unalga. In 1935 he became an ordnance officer at Coast Guard Headquarters and by 1937 was an officer at the Coast Guard Academy. From 1941-43 and again in 1945 he was stationed at Alameda, Calif. and during 1943-45 he was officer at the Norfolk District. He became commander of the 13th Coast Guard District in Seattle (1946-49) and the 12th District in San Francisco. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1948 and retired in 1951 with the rank of Vice Admiral.

Joseph E. Shaw was born in LaMar, CO, on Feb. 25, 1889; served in the US Navy, 1905-33; became secretary to his brother, Los Angeles Mayor Frank Shaw (b. 1877), in 1933; both men were convicted of selling civil service jobs, and a recall movement replaced Frank Shaw with Fletcher Bowron as mayor of LA.
