William Yost was born on June 6, 1841, in Jackson Township, Stark County, Ohio. He enlisted with the 104th Ohio Infantry Regiment, organized at Massillon, Ohio, on August 4, 1862. Yost fought in the Atlanta Campaign, his first engagement being at Resaca in May 1864. He survived the war unscathed and died in 1910. From the description of William Yost Civil War diary, 1863-1864. Gerard was proprietor of a drug store in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He began the study of fungi at a time when few American botanists had devoted attention to that group of plants, his first descriptions of new species appearing in the Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club for October, 1873, before the publication of the earliest mycological papers of Burrill, Ellis, Farlow, or Morgan.
