John Gillett Oglesby was the third child of Richard J. Oglesby and his second wife, Emma Gillett Keays Oglesby. John attended Harvard for a short time, but then left to fight in the Spanish American War. After returning from that he worked as private secretary to Governor Richard Yates and was then elected to the state legislature, where he served from 1904-1908.
