Powell family
Dr. Chapmon Powell (1798-1870) was one of the early pioneer settlers of the Atlanta region and founded a large and well-known family. He served as sheriff of DeKalb County from 15 February 1833 untill 10 January 1834 and was a member of the Georgia Legislature in 1836. Powell lived in a log cabin near present day Clairmont and North Decatur Road, where he conducted his medical practice. With his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Hardman Powell (1799-1850) they had a daughter named Martha A.J. Powell (1830-1917). In 1850 Dr. Powell moved to Atlanta where he built a house at the corner of Peachtree and Ellis streets, where he continued his medical practice.

The first Powel (Powell) to immigrate to America, Samuel Powel (b. 1673), reached Pennsylvania in 1685. The Nowells were a mining family active on Douglas Island, Gold Creek, Sheep Creek, and at Berners Bay in the 1890's and early 1900's. Nowell Avenue in West Juneau is named for this family. Thomas S.
