Brown, Orlando, 1801-1867
Orlando Brown was born in 1801 to John and Margaretta Mason Brown. In 1833 he became the first editor of the Frankfort newspaper the Commonwealth. He was a member of the Whig party and became actively involved in state and national politics. In 1848, he was appointed to Commissioner of Indian Affairs in the Zachary Taylor administration. During his long career, he also served as the editor for the newspaper The Campaign, served as Kentuckys Secretary of State under Governor John J. Crittenden, and was appointed the Commissioner of the Board of Enrollment for the Seventh District of Kentucky. He died in 1867.
