Elmer Ivan Applegate was an American botanist born March 31, 1867 near Ashland, Oregon, and educated at Stanford University. He is best known for his monograph on Erythroniums and his writings on the flora of Crater Lake National Park. From 1896-1898, Applegate and USDA botanist Frederick Vernon Coville conducted plant surveys in Oregon, from the Cascade Mountains from Klamath Falls to Portland.
