Elmer Ivan Applegate was an American botanist born March 31, 1867 near Ashland, Oregon, and educated at Stanford University. He is best known for his monograph on Erythroniums and his writings on the flora of Crater Lake National Park. From 1896-1898, Applegate and USDA botanist Frederick Vernon Coville conducted plant surveys in Oregon, from the Cascade Mountains from Klamath Falls to Portland. Applegate served as director of the Dudley Herbarium at Stanford University from 1928-1938. In 1940, and Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) awarded him an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Applegate also served as park-naturalist at Crater Lake National Park in his retirement, from 1934 until 1939. Applegate died November 16, 1949 in Williams, Oregon.
