McGraw, Eloise Jarvis

Eloise Jarvis McGraw was born on December 9, 1915 in Houston to Genevieve Lucinda and Loy Hamilton Jarvis. From an early age Eloise expressed an interest in writing. She graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City in 1933 and attended Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, where she majored in art. In 1940 she married William Corbin McGraw. Eloise McGraw's writing career began in 1943 when Parent's magazine accepted her first article. Her success as a juvenile author started with the publication of her first novel, Sawdust in his shoes. Spurred by this success and the publication of her husband's novel, Deadline, the McGraw's left California for Oregon in 1952 to pursue writing full time. Eloise proved a popular and prolific writer. Three of her books were Newbery Honor Books and many of them have appeared in other languages, as well as in Braille. She also wrote one adult novel, Pharoah, in 1958, and one non-fiction book, Techniques of fiction writing, in 1959. Eloise Jarvis McGraw died in November 2000. William Corbin McGraw was born in Des Moines, Iowa in January 1916. William attended Principia College in St. Louis, where he met Eloise Jarvis. He graduated from Drake University in 1938 and then attended Harvard University. Convinced that he could not earn a living writing fiction William moved into the newspaper business. The family moved to San Diego in 1945 when William joined the Navy. After two years in the Navy William began working at the San Diego union-tribune as a reporter, columnist, and feature writer. When Eloise published her first book in 1951, William was inspired to work on a book of his own. In 1952, under the name William Corbin, he published Deadline, a novel for young readers about the newspaper business. Over the next four decades he published nearly a dozen works for young readers, some of which were given various awards. He also wrote short stories for several magazines. William died in June 1999.
