Morton, Carlos

Prominent Chicano playwright, poet, and journalist. Born in Chicago on October 15, 1947. Son of a U.S. Army sergeant who changed the family name from Pérez to Morton. Received his BA in English from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1975; his MFA in Drama from the University of California San Diego in 1979; and his PhD in Drama from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. He has worked with Luis Valdez's Teatro Campesino. He has been the editor of several Latino magazines including La Luz, Nuestro, and Revista Chicano-Riqueña. Since 1990 he has been a theater professor at the University of California, Riverside.
