Born in Galveston, Texas, Herbert Lawrence Ganter received a B. A. degree from the College of William and Mary in 1927, and a law degree from the College in 1930. Ganter was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, ODK, and the F.H.C. He served as assistant director of the sesquicentennial celebration of Yorktown. He was archivist of the College from 1948 to 1974.
